Conveying Playing: Explaining How Classroom Experiences Build Tangible Skills

“What did you do today?” “I played!” As educators and caregivers, we know and love this sentiment – but it might give families a pause. It can sometimes be hard to understand what exactly “I played” entails: should my kid really be ‘playing’ all day? That’s where we have the opportunity to step up and start conveying playing in a way that captures all of its benefits. In this training, we’ll review what skills children might be practicing when they play, and gain a better understanding of how to train ourselves to see play as a vehicle for learning. We’ll then examine ways to ‘translate’ classroom experiences for families and other adults, ensuring that they understand how active children’s minds are.

  • Examine how children’s play can be viewed as ‘nouns’ and ‘verbs’, understanding the benefits and drawbacks of both lenses
  • Practice rephrasing classroom experiences in ways that make direct connections to skills (or standards) that adults inquire about
