One of the biggest challenges of any mentorship role – from a lead teacher to a director to a home visitor – is insuring that the environment of your conversations gives everyone room to think, contribute, and grow. Whether it’s day-to-day operations (should we have sticks on the playground?) or programming choices (should we celebrate any holidays in our school?), knowing how to talk about these things is just as important as what you’re talking about.
POPS is a framework that can help you intentionally draw out these conversations – taking them away from off-the-cuff emotional responses or arguments and turning them into guided thought processes. It doesn’t ask for you to be an expert in every issue: rather, it asks that you come with an open heart and mind and model how to do the same for others.
Consider how a variety of factors – from word choice to tone of voice to time of day – can encourage or discourage open and honest conversation
Define each of the four steps of the POPS framework and the ‘hearty questions’ associated with them
Practice rephrasing classroom or school-wide conversations in ways that draw inspiration from the POPS framework

We record all sessions. If there are technical problems while attending a live session, or you are unable to attend live, we can set you up with access to the session’s recording.
